LARRY AULT ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Teams of civic-minded volunteers and neighbors joined Saturday to paint more than 60 houses in Little Rock and North Little Rock as part of the Paint Your Heart Out program's spring sprucing. "I have done a lot of volunteering with the United Way," explained Tray Jones, a volunteer on a team calling itself The Crew that painted the home of Donald L. Galloway at 4800 W. 25th St. Jones, who works at First Commercial Bank, said he was on a team of young professionals. Although this was his first experience working with the Paint Your Heart Out campaign, he had volunteered in the past for the United Way. Ivy Ennis, a nursing student on the team, said the group spent the morning scraping Galloway's house and painting it white and the steps brown.

"The man who lives there thought it looked great," she said, explaining that the crew worked on the house from around 8 a.m. until about I p.m. It's "a blessing, you know," Galloway said. Several months ago the Paint Your Heart Out. organization asked if he would agree to having his house painted. "I really appreciate it," Galloway said. "I even got out and helped." He said about 15 people worked on the house.

Galloway's house was just one of many that were scrubbed and painted in the two cities. During the past seven years, almost 500 homes in 12 Little Rock and North Little Rock have been scraped and painted. Last year, more than 1,200 volunteers gave a fresh coat of paint to homes in the Holt neighborhood in North Little Rock and the East of Broadway and South End neighborhoods in Little Rock. Peggy Monahan, team captain for the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock, said that it took about 20 people only four hours to put down white and gray paint on Ethel Williams' home at 2021 Monroe St. "When you've got 20 people painting, it goes by pretty fast," she said. "We'll be back next year."

Jim Hathcock, manager of Neighborhood Programs for the city of Little Rock, said that the Paint Your Heart Out campaign motivated others in the neighborhoods to pitch in and clean up their lawns. Hathcock said about $40,000 was raised to cover the expenses. Youngsters from the James H. Penick Boys Club directed traffic and cleaned up after more than 1,000 volunteers ate lunch provided by the Jennings Osborne family at the Curran-Conway Park at 24th and Monroe Streets in Little Rock.
