ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE This year's Riverfest will present one of the most diverse musical lineups in the 21-year history of Little Rock's annual Memorial Day weekend gathering in Julius Breckling Riverfront Park and the River Market District. Details were announced Thursday at a River Market press conference.

For country fans, there are Jo Dee Messina and Trace Adkins on May 22. Soul-rhythm and blues lovers can hear the Ohio Players and the O'Jays on May 23. Nostalgic fans of old rock 'n' roll can hear War on May 22. Beatlefest, a tribute to the "Fab Four," returns May 24. Bill Haymes returns from Nashville and Northwest Arkansas' Crow Johnson & Kelly Mulhollan will perform, as will the gospel recording artists Odis Richrnond & Inner Court. Nick Devlin and Rachel Sutterfield will present a tribute to the late local singer-songwriter, Burger, on May 22. Sutterfield is Burger's niece, and Devlin was a long-time musical cohort.

For the festival-closer the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will play just before the Jennings Osborne family-sponsored fireworks show. The Jesse White Tumblers from Chicago will return to perform each day on the movement stage. Community dance groups, martial arts, ballet, art and jewelry and an area of food vendors will help complete the picture. Artist Alice Guffey Miller will display 25 9-foot-long, hand-painted fish wind socks created by thousands of state 4H club members with river visions. Admission of $3 covers all three days of the event. Children under 6 are admitted free. The Central Arkansas Transit Authority will operate $1 round-trip shuttle buses from the state Capitol area (Seventh and Marshall streets) and Mercantile Bank at One Riverfront Place in North Little Rock. War Memorial Stadium is not a shuttle stop. Although Riverfest will open officially at 5 p.m. May 22, it will kick off informally from l l a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that day with live music during the lunch hour. Southwestern Bell is the primary sponsor of Riverfest, and the five entertainment stages are named after other sponsors: the Budweiser/Magic l 05 stage, the First Commercial Movement stage, the Miller Lite KABF stage, the Southwestern Bell Amphitheatre stage and the CocaCola/B98.5 Kidstuff stage.

Jennings Osborne, wife of LR mayor sign up
for Adcock campaign

TRACIE DUNGAN ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Days after meeting the requirements to run for Pulaski County judge as an independent, Joan Adcock has begun assembling her campaign staff -- and possibly raising sticky issues in one local officeholder's home. Adcock, a Little Rock city director, will face County Judge Buddy Villines in the November general election. She learned Friday that she had collected more than enough valid petition signatures to go on the ballot.

One of her choices for campaign co-chairman could be perceived as a loyalty test for a mutual political colleague and friend of Adcock's and Villines', while the other is a name that Christmas-light lovers will instantly recognize. Patti Dailey, wife of Little Rock Mayor Jim Dailey, will share the chairman's duties with Little Rock philanthropist and businessman Jennings Osborne, Adcock said Wednesday.
~ Adcock said that while she plans to pay "courtesy visits" to all the mayors in Pulaski County to ask for their vote, she will not put any of them on the spot by asking for their support.

"I would hope they would all take a neutral stand -- even Mayor Dailey," Adcock said. "Because remember, if I lose, he's got to put up with me for another two years," she said, referring to her city Board of Directors term that expires Dec. 31, 2000. "That puts me in an interesting position." Adcock said she wouldn't want to cause any of the mayors to feel torn between herself and Villines, since the eventual winner will work closely with them on regional issues. Patti Dailey and Adcock go back more than 20 years, Adcock said, to the days when Paui Dailey shopped in Adcock's Youngland Children's Shop. The Daileys' children, now grown, even modeled her clothing in the store, Adcock said. Villines said that in politics one learns not to take things personally, noting that ''Jim and I have been close friends for years." But he added, "I would hope that he would vote for me!" Adcock said she chose Osbome -- well-known for his colossal Christmas light displays and gift-giving -- because he has much more to offer than money. "I feel like sometimes this community asks Jennings to just give and give and give," Adcock said. But Osborne impressed her because he is intelligent and well-read and keeps a sharp eye on local happenings in news and politics, she said. Osborne first met Adcock three or four years ago through her involvement in neighborhood causes. "She's like a tireless dynamo for this city," Osborne said. "I wish I had a tenth of her energy " Adcock's paid campaign coordinator, consultant and manager is Kaye Risser. Osborne and Patti Dailey will serve as advisers.

Paper Trails Come along for the ride: An 'Osbornetized' family feed These are but three of the seven giant cookers Jennings Osborne (center) uses to roast meat, which he then happily serves to crowds of up to 5,000. Matt Pierce: The first boyfriend.

Carrie Rengers The Washington Post contributed to this report. A police officer drove by Jennings Osborne's house and saw smoke billowing over his Cantrell Road compound. He alerted the fire department and numerous trucks came roaring to the rescue.

But Osborne didn't want the flames extinguished. He was cooking out. Of course, Osborne isn’t content with a simple family barbecue. He has six stainless-steel cookers -- each the size of a tool shed -- in the back yard of one of his three Cantrell Road houses. He has another of the mammoth cookers at his Hot Springs house. And he's building a freezer twice the size of most people's carports.

"Moderation is just not in my vocabulary," says the Christmas-light king. Anyone who has attended an Osborne family feed knows this. Osborne serves chicken, ribs, pork roast and turkey legs on 14-by- 18-inch platters instead of plates. There are also drinks and side dishes. Why so much food when most people would be happy with a free hot dog or hamburger? "It wouldn't be Osbornetized," Osborne says. "You gotta Osbometize it."

Osborne has more than 20 charity events between now and Christmas at which he'll feed up to 5,000 people at a time. He gets 40 such requests a week. "I live in a fantasy world, and I love to take people along with me," Osborne says. He and his wife, Mitzi, and daughter, Breezy, enjoy serving food and greeting guests. But most people do not know the extent to which Osborne works on am event. He used to have to stay up literally all night to tend to the meat to make sure its temperature was correct. "I have burnt up so much food trying to get this right," Osborne says. "We've done so many, we've finally got it down to an art."

His new cookers allow Osborne to get some sleep. "They're remarkable ovens," Osborne says of the gas-and-wood cookers. "They can handle so much and the temperature is constant." Osbome's cooking capacity is far more than an Arkansas restaurant and maybe even bigger than an institutional cooking facility, such as a prison. He won't say how much each cooker costs. Are they $2,000 each? Or $20,000 each? More?

Yes. "More than my first house," Osborne says. The entire production is astronomical. Osborne isn't complaining or revealing any costs. "People wouldn't believe it." His cash flow sometimes determines whether Osborne can have an event. "The good Lord provides," he says. "Instead of fish, we do ribs. My savior is Southern." Still, Osborne has two giant fears when he has a cookout. "I live in fear that I'll get a call the next day that 3,000 people are in the emergency room," he says. He also worries about overcooking or undercooking a meal. "I've done both, and it's so embarrassing."

There is one thing Osborne does to cut down on time and embarrassment. "When I do a big cookout, I tell the fire department I'm cooking," he says, ''to save them a trip."
