Welcome back
Carville

Anyone looking for James Carville in the 1992 election knew where to find him at lunch: either at Iriana's Pizza or Your Mama's Good Food in downtown Little Rock near campaign headquarters in the former Arkansas Gazette building.

The former newspaper building is one place Carville most likely will show this year (when the war room is re-created), but owners of the restaurants are hoping to see their old friend as well.

"Several people have asked me if James is going to be here," says Barbara Stockton, owner of Your Mama's. "Hopefully, I'll see him either the day before or that day (Election Day)."

The restaurant will open at night as well as for lunch.

"I'm really hoping to see a lot of old familiar faces," she says.

Stockton still remembers Carville's favorites.

"He loved the red beans and rice because he's Cajun." That's why he also likes the meatloaf with creole sauce, she says.

So is Stockton going to have some on hand in case Carville stops by?

"As a matter of fact, we are."

John Iriana wouldn't mind feeding Carville, either.

"If we can find him," that is.

The pizza place, just down from the Old State House, was hopping four years ago, and Iriana is planning a bigger party this year (30 kegs instead of 20, and taller glasses so the lines won't be so long).

He's also planning a commemorative T-shirt with a scruffy picture of a young, bearded Bill Clinton and the message, "Wow, I'm the +w+w+w+w+w President."

Flag honors

Have you ever wondered about the changing flags in front of the Capital Hotel in downtown Little Rock? There's always an American flag and an Arkansas one, but the third flag is ever-changing.

"We just bought them for special occasions," says General Manager Joe Rantisi.

Make that special people. VIPs.

"We'll fly the flag in their honor," Rantisi says.

For instance earlier this week, the Brazilian flag was flying for guests from Brazil.

Guests need not be dignitaries or celebrities to have flags flown, but it helps. All American flags will be flying Election Day.

Nothing but the truth

What about all those celebrities coming in for Election Night festivities? Are they checking into hotels such as the Capital under assumed names to protect their anonymity?

Rantisi doesn't think so.

"We require identification upon arrival, celebrity or otherwise," he says. "That's just the law."

Rantisi guesses that "a lot of celebrities travel under their real name." Meaning names with which they're not normally associated.

"There may be unique cases," Rantisi says of pseudonym use, but in his three years at the Capital, he hasn't encountered any.

The very rich

"Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me," wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald in "The Rich Boy."

This was something of an inspiration for Jon Winokur's "The Rich Are Different: A Priceless Treasury of Quotations and Anecdotes About the Affluent, the Posh, and the Just Plain Loaded."

Arkansas has quite a few very, very wealthy individuals, but only one made the book: Jenninge O.borne.

The man the book calls "one of the most notorious citizens of Little Rock" made it for his Christmas-light display. Neighbors who complained about his millions of lights won their battle in court and Osborne appealed unsuccessfully to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The book reports: "When U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor visited Little Rock in 1994, she asked to see two things: the Arkansas River and the Osborne Christmas display."

Osborne often is criticized for being extreme, but he looks fairly normal when compared to the other rich listed.

For instance, Ross Perot didn't like that the bricks of his boyhood home had been painted white. So when he bought the house, he had them sandblasted. When that didn't work, he ordered the house disassembled and the bricks turned around to show their unpainted sides.

He, too, doesn't appear so odd when compared to many old-monied menthrough the ages.

"When the Duke of Marlborough could not longer afford his valet, who had, among other things, always put the paste on the duke's toothbrush, the nobleman's shock was palpable: What's the matter with my toothbrush?' he exclaimed. The damned thing won't foam anymore!."'

Santa can do it

It may only be Halloween, but children's thoughts already are turning to other holiday treats.

"I've decided what I want for Christmas," announced one Little Rock 4-year-old to his parents.

"Oh, and what is that?" they asked.

"Well, I can't tell you," he said. "I'm going to ask Santa Claus."

The parents exchanged knowing glances and the mom set about to cajole the information out of her son.

Finally, he relented and explained how he would like a computer with a CD-ROM.

"That's a pretty tall order for Santa," the mom explained.

"I know," the boy replied. "It's too expensive for you. That's why I'm asking him."
